Phitodepuration is an ecocompatible depuration process well inserted within the environmental reclaim context, directed to save energy, cut the costs, and to allow the reduction in water waste.
Is a natural system for the depuration of sewage water projected to reproduce the natural depuration processes in a controlled setting.

It is composed by a waterproofed basin filled with gravelly material and vegetated with macrophyte plants.
Depuration process occurs thanks to the combined action among gravelly substrate, plants and microorganisms, helping with the organic substance humidification and with the use of nutritional elements from plants and microorganisms.
This technique can be successful used for civil waste water treatment (civil house, camping, agritourism, shopping center, etc.). In particular its application is spread in absence of sewage system or sewage systems are over costly.
This method is fostered by Italian and European regulations, especially by the law on waters (Decree-Law 152/06, exibit 5 - paragraph 3 – SUGGESTIONS: For all the build-up-areas with a population between 50 and 2000 A.E., it is desirable using natural depuration technologies such as lagooning or phitodepuration,…)
This particular system proposed by Idrodepurazione uses a proper natural rubber membrane EPDM IDRO apt to build phitodepuration basins together with another exclusive filtering material, IDROFLORA-LITE.
IDROFLORA LITE is a specific material for phitodepuration treatments and it allows a nitrogen and phosphorus reduction. The waterproof membrane EPDM IDRO is an hight resistance elastometer, elastic, easily transportable and easy to model.
Idroflora is a revolutionary system, a valid alternative to depuration and traditional subirrigation; it also helps in protecting the ground, water-bearing layers and more superficial waters.
Plants are getting in proportion of the number of equivament inhabitants, hydric daily equipment and average permeability estimated for hidrophil plants.
Idroflora phitodepuration system:
  • it uses innovative absorbing layers
  • it doesn’t have energetic consumptions, or electromechanical components
  • low costs of investment and management
  • it can sustain time and seasonal variations of the water load
  • it allows having nice green areas in any season, minimizing landscape impact and public nuisance
  • it protects underground waters
Pretratments of oils separation and polish are recommended and they could be supply by Idrodepurazione to complete the supply.
Wastewater coming from house kitcken, kitchen of restaurant will be send to specific plants for oils separations and polishes. Wastewater coming from WC will be send to imhoff tanks.
In these tanks the decantation of solid substances and anaerobic digestion of the sludges take place (thanks to bacterials who grow and live in absence of oxigen) assuring the fall of 95% settling substance of civil wastewater.
These tanks could be realized in polyethylene or concrete with modular rings.
Sub-superficial phytodepuration systems could be distinguished in two different ways:
  • orizontal flux bed (LFGO): use of horizzontal flux system is suggested for waste water refining in bigger plants;
  • vertical flux bed (LFGV): use of vertical flux system is suitable to the most of situations, expecially in case for single user.
With an hight number of equivalent inhabitants (more than 50/100) is suggested the use of the two systems in an integrate way, horizzontal for the first phase of oxidation and vertical for the refining phase.
Water is distributed into internal surface so it can pass through the different substrates, included the IDROFLORA-lite’s one.
Idroflora system is dimensioning considering a minimum surface of 2mq/ie until a maximum of 4 mq/ie.
The choise of plants to use has to be made considering these factors:
  • adsorbing depuration efficiency
  • ecology
  • environmental compatibility and availability
